Understanding the areas of care

Our work

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation connect movement, physical function and participation in everyday life.

Movement & function

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is concerned with movement and physical function. It brings together an understanding of how a person moves, the difficulties they experience and the activities they want to perform.

Assessment helps establish priorities and inform a plan appropriate to the individual. The relevant approach depends on the person and the findings of that assessment.

A useful distinction

Physiotherapy is an area of professional care. A particular technique, duration or schedule is a separate decision, made in the context of an individual situation.

Goals in daily life

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation focuses on functioning in daily life. Its goals may relate to independence, work, family routines or recreation, according to what matters to the individual.

Those goals connect physical abilities with the activities a person needs or wants to do. Rehabilitation is therefore personal: the same activity can have a different meaning and starting point for different people.

How the two areas connect

Physiotherapy can form part of rehabilitation. Movement and physical function contribute to broader goals involving daily activities and participation.

Understanding care

The individual comes first.

An initial physiotherapy appointment generally combines a discussion with an assessment of movement and function. That information helps put the person’s priorities in context.

Our first-visit guide explains this general process and useful topics to clarify when arranging care.
